Deep within the breathtaking fynbos-covered hills of Bot River, just 90 minutes from Cape Town, KolKol Mountain Lodge is more than just a getaway—it's where the South African wood-fired hot tub experience began.
KolKol Mountain Lodge was designed as a space for comfort and an escape from city life. Founders Rudi and Karen wanted to create a place where guests could truly unwind in nature. To enhance the experience, they initially added a splash pool—a haven for guests on hot days. However, they soon realised that its potential was limited by chilly evenings and the winter months.
Determined to provide a sustainable solution, Rudi spent hours researching and experimenting with ways to heat the pool without relying on electricity. The breakthrough came in the form of a submerged wood-fired oven. This clever innovation not only warmed the pool but also sparked an idea that would change outdoor relaxation forever.
As the lodge expanded to include two tented accommodations, a new challenge arose: how to create a pool that harmonized with the tents without using concrete. Thus, the idea of a polyethylene hot tub was born—a concept that aligned perfectly with KolKol's commitment to sustainability and aesthetic appeal. After much trial and error in finding the ideal material for the wood-fired oven, Rudi’s vision became reality.
What started as a unique feature at KolKol Mountain Lodge quickly caught the attention of surrounding lodges, sparking demand for similar wood-fired hot tubs. Recognising the potential, Rudi began selling these tubs to both the hospitality industry and private consumers. The first models were light and portable, earning the name “Travelin’ Tub.”
